Major DP Singh, also known as the "Blade Runner" and the first Indian amputee marathon runner, was born on February 12, 1970, in a small town in Uttar Pradesh, India. He graduated from the National Defence Academy in 1994 and joined the Kumaon Regiment of the Indian Army. In 1999, he was posted in Kargil as a part of Operation Vijay.
During the Kargil War, Major DP Singh was hit by a mortar shell which resulted in the amputation of his right leg. Despite this setback, he returned to active duty in 2002 after undergoing extensive rehabilitation. In 2006, he decided to take up running as a means of physical and mental recovery.
Since then, Major DP Singh has completed various marathons, including the prestigious Boston Marathon, the New York City Marathon, and the Mumbai Marathon. He has also been awarded the President's Award for courage and the Indian Army's highest peacetime gallantry award, the Sena Medal.
In addition to his running achievements, Major DP Singh is also a motivational speaker and an advocate for disability rights. He has worked with various non-profit organizations to raise awareness about the issues faced by people with disabilities and promote inclusivity and accessibility.
